Detailed instructions and flight techniques
Here is the complete manual of the acrobatic single-line kite “the Switch” which is certainly the fastest kite and the simplest to fly. Without any wand assembly, it opens by itself as soon as it is released in the air. Like a devil coming out of his box, the Switch spreads its wings on the wind.
Hold your "back to the wind", take the Switch out of its sleeve, attach your line to the movable flange (the shuttle) by a lark node. Then unwrap a quantity of yarn that you can lay out at your feet. With one hand, hold the thread near the kite (within 1 or 2 m of it). With the other hand (the one holding the Switch) throw it in the air, in front of you. Attention, the Switch opens like a spring, rather strongly, move it away from your face and your surroundings when opening. The Switch should open by itself, otherwise shake it a little. If it is blocked, help it by releasing the flange or what seems to be stuck by hand.
The Switch is a very powerful kite. Its tractive force does not exceed 1 kg in a wind of 40 km / h. However, for reasons of comfort and handling of the line during acrobatic piloting, I advise you to use one line not too thin ; and with strong resistance. For example, a line of 70 Kg or 90 Kg is suitable because its diameter ensures a much more comfortable handling.
I recommend that you use a Dyneema® or Spectra® wire of 90Kg resistance. Made of polyethylene fibers, it is slippery and heats very little fingers.
/!\ The use of polyester yarn is uncomfortable. Indeed, it heats up quickly in the fingers and easily causes burns. It is therefore necessary to wear protective gloves.
/!\ The nylon thread is very economical but also cuts the fingers, because often very thin. Only seasoned pilots with this type of line will appreciate.
/!\ The Kevlar (not sheathed) is strictly forbidden because extremely sharp and resistant.
Whether in a static flight or in an aerobatic flight, use a length of 10 to 20 m of line for a light or low wind (- 10 km / h, 2 Bft) and 20 to 50 m for a medium or stronger.
Each flange of the Switch has a sliding and self-locking knot. By pushing the
node up or down the kite thus modifies the shape and surface of each half wing.
The black mark (original setting), located between the two nodes, is suitable for most situations and it is not necessarily necessary to modify it. However, the setting depends mainly on the sensations of the driver.
The adjustable flanges on the left and right allow the wings of the Switch to be rounded or flattened according to the strength of the wind (strong or weak) and according to the desired sensation.
NB :It is preferable to make a similar adjustment on each side. An adjustment error, even large, does not prevent the Switch from flying. Its flight is no longer in the axis, it is offset, but it does not fall. However, you can find your own setting somewhere between the following three basic setting positions.
Adjustment positions :
high : The kite is very round, its wings offer a larger bearing surface. It therefore flies with less wind, and its acrobatic behavior is more radical.
Average : This is a setting everywhere. This is suitable for most situations and sensations.
Low : The kite is much flatter, its acrobatic flight is very soft and sensitive. It also starts more easily in rotation. This setting allows it to fly mainly through strong to very strong winds, and to remain stable in flight.
There are no changes required to switch from mono-wire to acrobatic mode. The Switch is controlled by a single line of restraint. So you can either play with it or let it fly alone.
How to play ?
A good shake on the line causes the shuttle (the movable flange) to tilt and changes the direction of flight, another jerk makes the first direction of flight reverse. So this is the "switch".
Acting on this line causes a direct rocking, or a lateral imbalance of the kite. Thus, by taking advantage of the imbalance, you can chain movements that can be repeated after a short time of practice.
Consequently, by linking the movements, the kite evolves on several spatial dimensions:
- If you bring the line back to you, it will accelerate in a straight line in the desired direction.
- Let the line run quickly enough between your fingers and the Switch will slide away, freely carried by the wind (be careful not to completely drop the line!).
- If you combine jolts and pulses on the line (even when doing anything), the Switch will make a superb combination of acrobatics.
In static mode
Fixed to the ground or held by hand, it is a kite mono-wire very stable, very little powerful and that in all winds.
You can use its pouch as an anchor, filling it with sand for example, and then attach the end of the line by a knot to the snap hook located at the top of the pouch.
In Acrobatic mode
With a control based on pulses, jerks and controlled detents of the line, it is a very complete acrobatic kite. Flip, switch, yoyo, axel and fade are the currently listed figures. It's up to you to discover them or to invent them!
NB : If it is very pleasant to drive it by having a very soft and subtle driving behavior, a more powerful and radical driving also offers a potential of figures and important chainings. So, do not hesitate to "shake" the Switch, it is truly very resistant.
First, hold the Switch at the spot facing you, one hand left and one right, as shown.
Then, divide one hand in the middle of the kite by forming a smaller circle. The Switch deforms and each wing forms an 8.
Then fold the other side over. The eight make a circle.
Finally, plunge the hand holding the folded Switch at the bottom of its bag to easily slide it in. In addition, you can place its line on the plate also in the bag (I recommend you fold the Switch and leave its line attached on it to store them together in the bag).
You are finished, the Switch is folded!
NB : The general deformation has a slight resistance to folding. However, do not hesitate to go to the end of this movement by forcing a little ... so that the Switch has the form of a double helix.
